Contaminación de Piñeras en San Carlos. Costa Rica

 

En el 2015, el Servicio Fitosanitario —dependencia del Ministerio de Agricultura y Ganadería (MAG)— tuvo acceso a un informe parcial del Centro de Investigaciones en Contaminación Ambiental (CICA) de la Universidad de Costa Rica.

 

Unas 2.050 personas en Aguas Zarcas de San Carlos estuvieron dos días sin servicio regular de agua desde el pasado 1 de marzo y hasta el 3 de marzo del 2020, luego de que actividad piñera contaminó una naciente con el potente agroquímico Bromacil.

 

La contaminación se detectó a través de un monitoreo realizado periódicamente por varias instituciones del estado en la zona. El estudio encontró un 0.14% de Bromacil en las fuentes de agua, según explicó la Asada de Los Llanos.

 

Para el administrador de la Asada de Aguas Zarcas, José Marvin Mora, este incidente genera preocupación para las otras comunidades de la zona y añadió que siguen de cerca los monitoreos periódicos para evitar una situación similar.

Desde mayo del 2017, Costa Rica prohibió las nuevas importaciones de bromacil. Sin embargo, el gobierno permitió a los productores continuar utilizando las reservas ya existentes en el país de este agroquímico.

 

Desde entonces, han surgido varios casos de contaminación del agua con este producto. En el 2019, la Sala Constitucional incluso ordenó la limpieza de seis nacientes de agua contaminadas en Río Cuarto de Alajuela, las cuales dejaron a 13 mil personas sin agua.
