Los detectives privados realizan investigaciones para obtener información y aportar pruebas sobre hechos o consultas hechas por encargo de clientes particulares.
Los detectives privados también pueden investigar delitos perseguibles (semipúblicos y privados o particulares) siempre y cuando sea a instancia de la parte legitimada en el proceso penal.
El permiso de investigador privado debe ser acreditado por el Ministerio de Seguridad Publica, no se deje engañar,el permiso de investigador privado debe ser acreditado por el Ministerio de Seguridad Publica, no se deje engañar, si la persona no está acreditada no se puede presentar de pruebas en ningún tribunal de Costa Rica.
