Seis venenos mortales extremadamente difíciles de detectar

La definición de veneno habla de cualquier sustancia química dañina que pueda provocar una enfermedad o lesión que altera el organismo de un ser vivo. A lo largo de la historia han existido infinidad de sustancias de esta índole, y de entre ellas, las más peligrosas eran aquellas que resultaban difíciles de detectar.

Como bien explican, con el paso de los años el veneno se ha asociado a la muerte de seres vivos, siendo en el caso de los humanos un método más para matar o asesinar a alguien de manera lenta y muchas veces silenciosa.

El arsénico

La primera de las sustancias es el arsénico. El veneno ha existido durante mucho tiempo, de hecho se conocían y usaban mezclas desde el Imperio Romano. El arsénico es un tipo de metaloide, además de ser bastante común en la corteza terrestre. Cuando se mezcla con comida o bebida, es inodoro, incoloro e insípido, y los síntomas de una sola dosis grande se parecen a los de una intoxicación alimentaria letal.

El arsénico también puede administrarse en dosis más pequeñas durante un período de tiempo más largo. En este caso produce un efecto más sutil, los síntomas progresan lentamente, incluyendo cierta confusión y parálisis, hasta llevar a la muerte.

Un dato curioso (y engañoso) es que el arsénico se absorbe a través del intestino delgado, y una vez que entra al torrente sanguíneo, el cuerpo lo sustituye por fosfato por error. Esto causa estragos alrededor de los sistemas necesarios para un metabolismo funcional.

Quizás así se pueda entender que el arsénico fue un “arma” asesina de lo más popular durante gran parte de la historia moderna, aunque es mucho menos común hoy en día porque es más fácil de detectar. Una prueba química puede confirmar la presencia de arsénico en fluidos corporales desde principios del S. XIX.

El cianuro

Otro clásico es el cianuro, con el que cuentan que trataron de matar al mismísimo Rasputín. El cianuro está hecho de un átomo de carbono pegado a un átomo de nitrógeno, y tiene varias formas. El cianuro de hidrógeno es azul pálido o incoloro líquido a temperatura ambiente, mientras que el cianuro de sodio y el cianuro de potasio son polvos blancos.

Se dice que todos tienen un cierto sabor a almendras amargas. Una vez que alguien ingiere algo de cianuro, rápidamente entra en su corriente sanguínea, aunque no siempre es mortal. En pequeñas dosis, el cuerpo puede eliminar el cianuro a través de la orina con una mezcla de azufre.

Sin embargo, con dosis más grandes, el cianuro comienza a atacar células de oxígeno y, finalmente, estas comienzan a morir. Obviamente, la falta de oxígeno no es una buena noticia para el corazón, el sistema respiratorio o el sistema central nervioso, todos sistemas esenciales afectados, y cuyos síntomas pasan por náuseas, dificultad para respirar, convulsiones o paro cardíaco.

Lo que hace que el cianuro sea especialmente complicado de detectar, incluso hoy en día, es que es de acción muy rápida. Dependiendo de la dosis, puede matar en horas o incluso minutos. Se puede detectar en la sangre, pero un paciente probablemente estaría muerto antes obtener los resultados de un laboratorio (la prueba dura un día aproximadamente).

Con todo, hay algunas “señales” que los doctores pueden detectar, por ejemplo, si hay oxígeno extra en la sangre, aunque como decimos, sigue siendo un veneno muy efectivo.

Talio

El talio es un metal pesado con múltiples radiactivos isótopos. Fue descubierto en 1861, y ha estado implicado en asesinatos en todo el mundo desde entonces. Como veneno, el talio es insípido, inodoro, y muy letal (ingerir un solo gramo puede matarte), y también puede ser inhalado o absorbido a través de la piel.

Una vez que entra al cuerpo, corroe el revestimiento del tracto digestivo, conduciendo a dolor abdominal, diarrea y vómitos. También reemplaza el potasio en el sistema en todo el cuerpo, de la misma forma que el arsénico reemplaza el fosfato, y eso afecta a la producción de proteínas.

Aun así, el talio es bastante más lento comparado con otros venenos. Los síntomas gastrointestinales duran desde 12 a 96 horas. Luego, de 1 a 5 días después del envenenamiento, pueden aparecer síntomas cardíacos, hepáticos y renales. Además, los pacientes también pueden perder todo su cabello (si viven lo suficiente).

Dicho esto, a pesar de que el talio es de acción lenta, no es fácil de detectar. El talio se podría detectar en sangre y orina, pero la lenta progresión de los síntomas no permite hacerlo al momento.

Polonio 210

Se trata de un metal que se encuentra en el mineral de uranio, que a menudo aparece como un subproducto de los reactores nucleares. Se puede procesar en un sabor insípido e inodoro compuesto que se disuelve en agua, convirtiéndolo en un buen candidato en la categoría de los venenos “indetectables”.

Además, es mucho más mortal que el cianuro: la dosis letal es de tan solo unos pocos miligramos. El Polonio 210 se hizo famoso en el 2006 gracias al caso del ex espía ruso Alexander Litvinenko, asesinado en Londres (probablemente con té mezclado con polonio 210). En la investigación, los doctores no identificaron el veneno hasta unas pocas horas antes de su muerte.

Lo que hace que el polonio 210 sea tan peligroso es que a medida que las moléculas se descomponen, emiten radiación alfa, partículas cargadas hechas de dos protones y dos neutrones. Fuera del cuerpo, las partículas alfa pueden ser bloqueadas con una simple hoja de papel, pero dentro del cuerpo, la radiación separa las moléculas de oxígeno dañando ADN y matando células.

En el caso de Litvinenko, esas partículas alfa ayudaron a los doctores a descubrir qué envenenó al ex espía. Si hacemos caso a la literatura médica, es el único caso registrado de envenenamiento por Polonio 210.

Etilenglicol

El etilenglicol es la base de una gran cantidad de anticongelante que usamos en el coche. Tiene un sabor dulce, y se puede adquirir más o menos fácil. Después de que alguien o ingiera, se verá bien por unas horas, pero su cuerpo en realidad está ocupado descomponiendo el veneno en otras sustancias toxicas. Luego aparecen síntomas de mareo, dolor abdominal y, normalmente, la persona entra en coma.

Lo que ha pasado es que uno de los subproductos de etilenglicol se rompe causando una condición peligrosa llamada acidosis metabólica. Esto se produce cuando la sangre dealguien también se vuelve ácido, manteniendo todas las reacciones químicas que componen su metabolismo correctamente. Además, el veneno también crea

cristales de oxalato de calcio en los riñones que destruyen físicamente el tejido renal.

El etilenglicol puede detectarse en la sangre, pero para la mayoría de los hospitales requiere enviar una muestra a un laboratorio externo y esperar días para obtener resultados.

La adelfa

El nombre “adelfa” se refiere a varias plantas del género Nerium que tienen flores rosadas o moradas y se usan comúnmente en los jardines. Lo que hace que la adelfa sea tóxica son dos potentes glucósidos, oleandrina y neriina, ambos en la planta.

La intoxicación por adelfa es parecida a la intoxicación digitálica, entre 4-12 horas. Los primeros signos de intoxicación son gastrointestinales: náuseas y vómitos, con deposiciones diarreicas sanguinolentas. Como último síntoma puede llevar a una parada cardíaca.

El tratamiento a seguir también es el de la intoxicación digitálica. Cuando aparecen trastornos cardíacos hay que evitar el lavado de estómago. Se puede utilizar carbón activo, sobre todo en los casos de intoxicación muy reciente.
